What Is Warranty Insurance?

This is a car warranty, otherwise known as Mechanical Breakdown Insurance.

Protect4Sure warranties provide cover, from day one, towards the cost of repair or replacement of insured parts following mechanical breakdown, or identified as likely to suffer imminent breakdown by a suitably qualified engineer during routine service or MOT up to the claim limit you select.

  Whether your car has a full or partial service history or no proof of service, you can still benefit from all the protection of Protect4Sure warranty.

  If your car has no service history, or a partial history where it has not been serviced by a VAT registered garage in the last 12 months, you just need to ensure one is completed within 21 days/750 miles, your car will be covered once this is done.

  Throughout the policy term your car must continue to be serviced as recommended by the manufacturer.

  As long as your car is under 10 years old/100,000 miles at the start of the policy (no limit once cover starts), Protect4Sure policy holders have the choice of either Protect4Sure Elite or Protect4Sure Easy.

  Both offer day one comprehensive protection and value without the requirement of a pre-inspection, or the need to have a full service history (see requirements during cover).

  Turbo charger including Wear and Tear (if fitted by the manufacturer) for vehicles up to 10 years,100,000 miles at time of claim.

  Protect4Sure Elite
  Provides all electrical and all mechanical cover and the added benefit of failure due to Wear & Tear included for cars up to 6yrs/60000 miles at time of claim.

  Protect4Sure offer a choice of claim limits (maximum amounts) that can be claimed for each breakdown.  These range from £1000 per claim all the way up to your cars retail value.

  There is no limit to the number of claims that can be made.

  Like all warranty companies, the aggregate (combined) amount that can be claimed on the policy is the retail value of the car.

  If you prefer not to pay for your warranty in full, you can spread the cost of any one, two or three year policy by paying a 20% deposit followed by just 9 monthly payments.

  Whichever level of cover you select, you can choose one, two or three-years cover.

  There is also a big saving by purchasing a second or third years cover too!

  The costs incurred in setting up your warranty are included in the first years premium. So of course, buying 2, or three-years cover saves you money.

  No need to worry about age or mileage. With Protect4Sure, as long as your car is under 10 years / 100,000 at policy start, there is no limit after cover starts.

  Protect4Sure policy holders have the choice of using the approved repairer or your own preferred repairer, if they are vat registered and ensure the claims procedures are followed.

  To save you being out of pocket, whenever possible, we settle the bill with the repairing garage. This is largely achievable when repairs are carried out by our approved repairer.

  There may be occassions where you are unaware a problem is looming, but it shows up during service or MOT.

  Safety first! We don't want you to drive with a faulty or failing part.

  Therefore, if an insured part is identified as likely to suffer imminent breakdown by a suitably qualified engineer during MOT, claims are adjudicated as normal.

  Protect4Sure warranties are effective in Great Britain, Northern Ireland and Channel Islands and valid for up to an aggregate (total) of 60 days per annum for driving in the Republic of Ireland and mainland Europe. 

• Contribution towards forward transportation more...

  If your car is being repaired under your warranty, Protect4Sure warranties include up to £60 towards a return rail ticket.

• Contribution towards overnight accommodation more...

  If your car is being repaired under your warranty, Protect4Sure warranties include up to £60 towards hotel expenses.

• Contribution towards replacement vehicle hire more...

  We will pay toward the cost of hiring a car, up to the daily limit of your policy, for up to 7 days and a maximum of £210.

  This benefit starts after the first 24 hours your vehicle is out of use as long as it is not due to a lack of availability of parts or a delay in starting the repair.

  Protect4Sure warranties provide up to £100, whatever level of cover or claim limit you choose, toward the cost of recovering your car to the nearest repairing garage as result of failure of an insured part.

  Repairs carried out at the approved repairer are guaranteed for 12 months or 12,000 miles and, whenever possible, we settle the bill with them directly, so you aren't out of pocket.

Service Requirements During Cover

Full, partial or no service history, here's how to benefit from Protect4Sure

• What is acceptable proof of service? more...

  Proof of service is not required when you take out your warranty but you may be asked for it in the event of a claim.

  Acceptable proof of servicing is either

   - The service book correctly stamped and completed by a VAT registered garage.
  or
   - Fully detailed VAT service invoice(s) indicating servicing dates and mileages.

  No problem!

  We understand it's not always clear if your car has been serviced exactly as the manufacturer recommends.

  So, if you're unsure, after purchasing your Protect4Sure warranty, all you need to do is have a service completed by a VAT registered garage within 21 days or 750 miles.

  Your car will be on risk the moment the service is completed and we'll only require proof if you have a claim.

  Once on cover, simply follow the manufacturers service schedule at the intervals of the time or mileage set by them.

• My car doesn't have any service history more...

  If your car has no proof of service at all, or the last service is missing and has not been serviced by a VAT registered garage in the last 12 months... No problem!

  Simply have a service done by a VAT registered garage within 21 days or 750 miles after taking out your warranty.

  Your car will be covered the moment the service is completed and we'll only require proof if you have a claim.

  Once on cover, simply follow the manufacturers service schedule at the intervals of the time or mileage set by them.

• When must I get my car serviced? more...

  If your car has a full service history, just continue to follow the service schedule as set out by the manufacturer.

  If the service history is incomplete, but a service has been carried out in the last 12 months by a VAT registered garage, again you only need to continue to follow the service schedule as set out by the manufacturer.

  If you have no service history for your car, you must ensure a service is completed within 21 days or 750 miles (whichever is sooner).  We don't insist on an expensive franchised dealer service, this can be completed by any vat registered garage.  Once the service is completed, your car is covered.

  Once on cover, simply follow the manufacturers service schedule at the intervals of the time or mileage set by them.

• Do I have to go to the expense of a franchised dealer service? more...

  No, many of us have a trusted local garage.

  As with all warranty providers, whichever garage completes the work, to be recognised as a service under warranty terms, the garage must be vat registered.

• How often must I service my car? more...

  Check the manufacturer’s service schedule, and follow that.

  If you're unsure just make sure to have your car serviced every 12,000 miles or 12 months - whichever comes sooner.

  Protect4Sure don't insist on expensive franchise dealer servicing, you can use any vat registered garage.

• What is Wear & Tear? more...

  When a car warranty refers to parts failing due to “Wear & Tear”, the meaning is

  “the expected deterioration or performance of a part due to the cars age or mileage”

  That is, parts that have not lasted as long as the manufacturer intended.

  It’s important to note items that need to be replaced at regular intervals and are classified as a normal maintenance or service items such as brake pads, batteries, bulbs, wiper blades etc. would not be covered by a vehicle warranty.

  In the normal course of events, it is reasonable for authorisation to be obtained before starting repairs.

  However, in an emergency situation, such as your car being attended to by a recovery organisation when the claims office is closed, your policy makes provision for the claim to be reviewed. Refer to your policy for full details.

• What should I do if my car has a fault or breaks down? more...

  Protect4Sure has appointed AutoProtect (MBI) Limited to ensure claims are handled swiftly over the phone by qualified and experienced professionals to guide you through the process.

  Call 01279 456500 9am - 5pm Weekdays:  9am - 1pm Saturday.
  You don't need to wait for your car to breakdown, if you notice a fault or, if during MOT or routine service your repairer notices an insured part is about to fail, just pick up the phone.

  Don’t start repairs without an authorisation number
  It’s really important to have authorisation from the claims department before giving the repairer permission to start any work. Without it your claim may be invalidated.

  Book your car in for repair
  The claims department will help you find the nearest approved repairer. The approved repairer is Halfords Autocentres, one of the UK's leading MOT, car service and repairs specialists - voted “excellent” on Trustpilot with over 80,000 reviews. You are of course free to use your own repairer as long as they are vat registered.

  Book your car in and, if necessary, give them your permission to carry out fault finding. Try to have your policy schedule and service records available just in case they are needed.

  Authorisation
  The garage will identify the cause of the breakdown and check with the claims department that the parts needing repair or replacement are covered by your warranty.

  The claims department will provide an authorisation number to the garage for the repairs and costs, this is why they need your policy information and possibly service records.

  Payment
  To save you being out of pocket, where possible authorised costs will be settled directly with the repairer. You will just need to pay the cost of any additional work not covered by your warranty.

  Approved repairers will know the process and send details of the invoice with the authorisation number to the claims department.

  Cars can let you down at the most inconvenient time and your Protect4Sure warranty has a provision for this.

  If you find yourself in the situation of having to carry out repairs in an emergency situation, for example attended by a recovery organisation when the claims office is closed, then you should:

    - Retain any parts removed from your car as they may need to be inspected.
    - Obtain a VAT receipt from the repairer showing
          date and time the repair was diagnosed and carried out.

Cancellations & Refunds

• 21 days to change your mind with full refund more...

  Protect4Sure Warranties are contracts of Insurance, therefore our policy holders have what is known as a “cooling off period” where you can cancel for any reason and receive a full refund. Under UK insurance rules, this is 14-days, Protect4Sure have extended this to 21 days.

  All you need to do, is let us know within three weeks of purchase you have decided to cancel your policy and you will receive a full refund of premium paid, unless of course we have paid, authorised or incurred costs in relation to a claim.

  If you have only discussed a claim or possible failure, and no costs incurred, you will still receive a full refund of premium paid after deducting the admin fee.

  Because our warranties are insurance contracts, the policy terms provide our policy holders the guarantee the insurer is legally required to provide the refund.

• Pro-Rata refund after cooling off period more...

  While we hope you choose to continue with your warranty insurance for the full term, unlike typical online warranties and discretionary plans, we don’t expect you to pay for the full term if you decide to cancel after the cooling-off period or unfairly calculate a low “partial” refund.

  If you decide to cancel after 21 days, as long as claims haven't been paid, authorised or costs incurred, you will only need to pay premium calculated on a pro-rata basis for the time your policy has been in force plus an admin fee.

  If you are paying by monthly instalments, and the premium paid at time of cancellation is lower than the total due, plus the admin fee, you will only need to pay the additional amount and all future monthly payments would be cancelled.

  Because our warranties are insurance contracts, the policy terms provide our policy holders the guarantee the insurer is legally required to provide the pro-rata refund.

  Protect4Sure Drive Elite and Protect4Sure Drive Easy both provide for an unlimited number of times you can claim on the policy.

• Is there a maximum amount the policy will pay? more...

  The maximum amount that can be claimed per breakdown is the claim limit selected by you.
  
  Protect4Sure Drive Elite and Protect4Sure Drive Easy both provide for an unlimited number of claims up to the Glass’s Guide retail value of your car.

• How much of the hourly labour rate is covered? more...

  The hourly labour rate, for authorised claim times, charged to Protect4Sure by the approved repairer is covered in full, subject to your chosen claim limit.

  The usual hourly labour rate of the approved repairer is over £100.  However, in view of the large volume of warranty repair work carried out, unsuprisingly the rate charged to us is significantly discounted, reducing repair costs and allowing us to pass on lower warranty premiums.

  If you choose to use your own repairer, the claims Administrator, AutoProtect (MBI) Limited, will pay them up to the equivalent AutoProtect national labour rate (including vat) which is currently £57.60ph if the repairer is inside the M25, or £48ph outside the M25.

• What hourly labour rate is covered if I use my own repairer? more...

  If you prefer to use your own repairer, the claims Administrator, AutoProtect (MBI) Limited, will authorise up to a reasonable retail price for parts and up to the equivalent AutoProtect national labour rate (including vat) which is currently £57.60ph if the repairer is inside the M25, or £48ph outside the M25.

  - LPG, Electric or Hybrid powered vehicles
  - Vehicles with a gross weight exceeding 3,500kg

• Breakdown if monthly payment not received more...

  Faults that occur when payment is outstanding will not be covered, so it's really important to resolve as soon as possible.

  Monthly payments are collected on the 1st of every month from your original payment card and, if the payment doesn't complete, we will notify you by email immediately.

  The most common cause for a declined payment is the original payment card has expired. If this is the case, just use the link in the email to complete the payment.

  There is also a link to update card details if your card has been stolen or lost.

  We're sympathetic the payment may have failed due to other circumstances outside of your control.  If this is the case please be sure to call us or reply to the email with a convenient time and number we can call you as soon as possible.

  If payment remains outstanding, and we don't hear from you, we will endevour to contact you by 'phone and letter to help resolve the situation.

  Important: Breakdown that occurs after any unpaid monthly payment was due and before the monthly payment is paid will not be covered.

• Diagnostics more...

  Usually, the cause of a fault is known, and the repairs can be completed without the need to spend time fault finding.  In this instance, if the warranty covers the fault, the warranty pays toward the labour cost of repairs in the normal way.

  Sometimes though, it isn’t clear what is causing the fault and the garage needs to investigate the cause.  If this happens, and the garage makes a charge to identify the fault, the cost would not be included in the amount paid by a warranty.

  This is considered an industry standard and the reality is, across the spectrum, even when a website advertises diagnostics are covered, the small-print typically removes cover with phrases like “only if assessed by us as being reasonable” or “at our absolute discretion” - Predictably these are unregulated, uninsured, plans.

  While there are certain repair times that do include diagnostics, Protect4Sure believe it is wrong to imply warranties cover “all” diagnostic costs.

  The FCA set a maximum threshold for the retail premium in relation to underwriting costs.  In simple terms, this means the retail premium must be directly related to “actual” claims costs.

  SMG stands for Sequential Manual Gearbox. It's essentially a transmission capable of functioning as an automatic, or functioning as a manual transmission. The innovation is that, when functioning as an automatic, the driver does not need to operate a clutch pedal, simply designate desired gear. This is done by a traditional stick, or a set of paddle shifters attached to the steering column or steering wheel, depending on the model BMW.

  A diesel particulate filter (DPF) is a filter that captures and stores exhaust soot (some refer to them as soot traps) in order to reduce emissions from diesel cars.  But because they only have a finite capacity, this trapped soot periodically has to be emptied or 'burned off' to regenerate the DPF.

  This regeneration process cleanly burns off the excess soot deposited in the filter, reducing the harmful exhaust emission and helps to prevent the tell-tale black smoke you used to see from diesel vehicles, particularly when accelerating.
